How work hours and overtime are calculated
Under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), the standard workweek is 40 hours. Any hours worked beyond 40 in a single week must be paid at 1.5 times the employee's regular rate. Some states add their own rules. California, for example, also requires overtime after 8 hours in a single day and double time after 12 hours.
Here's how gross pay with overtime works:
(Regular hours × rate) + (Overtime hours × rate × 1.5) = gross pay
- Mon8h
- Tue8.5h
- Wed9h
- Thu8h
- Fri9h
| Regular | 40h × $18.50 | $740.00 |
|---|---|---|
| Overtime | 2.5h × $27.75 | $69.38 |
| Gross pay | $809.38 |
Net pay is what remains after subtracting federal income tax, state income tax, Social Security (6.2%), and Medicare (1.45%). Tracking your hours accurately is essential. Payroll errors are common and harder to dispute without records.
TimeClock44 tracks all of this for you. Get it free on iOS and Android.

How do I clock in and clock out?
